Resumen
In this paper, we analyze the construction of the Chilean toponym lo + proper name (mainly, surnames). We place particular emphasis on tracing the origin and historical evolution of this structure from a perspective that incorporates an examination of geogra-phical and philological documentation of the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as the theoreti-cal frameworks of historical grammar. Furthermore, we explore the potential connection of this construction with a comparable toponymic usage documented in the Spanish region of Murcia. Additionally, we reflect on the grammaticalization and constructionalization of the scheme, and on the grammatical and semantic functioning of the neuter article lo.
